Benefits Coverage Ends

Your coverage doesn’t just switch off — what happens next depends on why it’s ending. Find your situation below to see what continues, what ends, what you can carry with you, and what you need to do next.
Which applies to you?
Leaving the Company
If you are leaving the Company (voluntary or involuntary), your coverage generally ends on your separation date, with COBRA available.
- Medical, Dental, Vision, and EAP — coverage ends on your last day, and a COBRA kit is mailed to you automatically.
- Life and AD&D Insurance — also ends that day; you have 30 days to port or convert to an individual policy.
- 401(k) — stays invested unless you request a distribution or rollover.
- Health Savings Account (HSA) — funds remain yours to use.
- Flexible Spending Account (FSA) — expenses incurred before separation can be reimbursed if submitted by March 31 of the following year.
See more about Leaving the Company.
Retiring
If you are retiring, your coverage generally ends on your separation date, with COBRA available, but Medicare rules apply.
- If you’re already Medicare-eligible, COBRA can run until your qualifying period ends, but it becomes secondary to Medicare, so you’ll need Part A and Part B in place to avoid gaps.
- EAP ends 30 days after retirement unless you enroll in COBRA medical.
- Once you’re on Medicare, HSA contributions stop, but existing funds stay usable tax-free.
- Your 401(k) distribution kit arrives within 30–60 days.

Change to benefits ineligible status
If you are moving to a benefits-ineligible status (e.g., reduced hours), your coverage continues through month-end, then Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage picks up automatically.
- Current medical, dental, and vision coverage runs through the end of the month.
- After that, you’re automatically enrolled in ACA coverage at your same plan and tier — no action needed.
- You have 14 days to drop it if you don’t want it; otherwise, it continues through year-end.
- EAP continues up to 3 months under ACA or COBRA.
- Life insurance and AD&D end on your status-change date, with 31 days to convert.
- 401(k) participation is unaffected.

What is COBRA
COBRA gives you the option to keep your health coverage for a limited time after it would normally end, such as when you leave a job, lose eligibility, or experience certain life events. It allows you to stay on your employer’s plan by paying the full cost of the coverage yourself, plus an administrative fee. COBRA helps bridge the gap, so you don’t go without insurance while you transition to new coverage.
